Understanding the Nature of Brake Noise

When braking, friction between the brake pad and the rotating brake disc converts kinetic energy into heat.
This process naturally produces vibration — and when that vibration reaches a frequency audible to the human ear, it becomes what we perceive as brake noise.

In other words, vibration is the root cause of brake noise.

Brake Pad–Related Causes

(1) Friction Material Issues

If the friction formula is too hard or not properly balanced, the pad may vibrate during light braking, creating a high-pitched noise.
Using low-quality materials or unevenly distributed metallic particles can also generate unstable friction and harsh sound.

(2) Back Plate Accuracy

Deformation or dimensional deviation of the back plate causes poor contact with the caliper piston, leading to vibration and abnormal sound.

Brake System–Related Factors

(1) Uneven or Worn Brake Discs/Drums

Grooves, rust, or surface irregularities on the disc can cause uneven friction and squealing noise.
(See our related post: “How Old Brake Discs Cause Noise with New Pads”)

(2) Missing or Faulty Components

Worn or missing accessories like guide pins, shims, or springs, or a sticking caliper piston, can prevent the pads from returning smoothly, causing vibration or squeal.

(3) Pads Not Properly Bedded-In

New pads need time to conform to the disc surface.
Before full contact is achieved, temporary noise is common — usually disappearing after 200–300 km of normal driving.

Environmental and Driving Factors

(1) Moisture and Condensation

After rain or washing, a thin rust layer may form on the brake disc surface.
The first few brake applications in the morning may produce a short “grinding” sound, which disappears once the rust film wears off.

(2) Low Temperatures

Cold weather can temporarily harden the friction material, causing light noise until the system warms up.

(3) Dust or Foreign Particles

Small stones or sand particles trapped between the pad and disc can cause sharp scraping noises — usually gone after several brake applications.

(4) High Temperature + Sand + Dry Air (Middle East & Desert Conditions)

In regions such as Iraq and the Middle East, brake noise is more common due to:

  • High temperature: Ambient temperatures exceed 50–60°C, while braking temperatures can reach 400–600°C.
If the formula lacks thermal stability, the friction layer may carbonize, causing uneven friction and high-frequency squeal.
  • Dry and dusty conditions:
Low humidity makes pads harder, reducing natural lubrication.
Sand particles between the pad and disc create abrasive wear and vibration noise.

How to Reduce or Eliminate Brake Noise

  1. ✅ Use high-quality brake pads with the right formulation.
Choose semi-metallic, low-metallic, or ceramic types depending on vehicle and region.
For desert or high-mountain climates, POWERTECH provides special high-temperature formulas.
  2. ✅ Check the condition of brake discs and system components before installation.
Ensure proper fitment, surface smoothness, and clean assembly.
  3. ✅ Perform correct bedding-in after installation to allow the friction surface to stabilize and reduce vibration.

POWERTECH Brake Pads — Quiet, Safe, Reliable

POWERTECH Brake Pads manufacturer supplier and factory.

POWERTECH AUTO specializes in producing brake pads and brake shoes for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Our friction materials are carefully engineered to provide:

  • No noise, no vibration
  • Low dust, long service life
  • High temperature resistance up to 650°C
  • Stable braking performance under all conditions

In addition, POWERTECH adds large-particle graphite and carbon fiber to our semi-metallic and ceramic formulas.
These materials not only enhance wear resistance but also create a natural lubricating layer, greatly reducing noise during braking.

That’s why POWERTECH brake pads are quieter, safer, and longer-lasting — even under the toughest conditions.
